How To Choose The Correct Gear / Derailleur Hanger

Identifying and finding Your Hanger

Nearly all modern bikes have what’s known as a derailleur hanger or gear mech hanger. Located at the rear of the bike, this is a part of the dropout system that, in the event that you suffer a mechanical failure, will drop off and save your precious (and expensive!) frame from being damaged.

They are designed to be replaceable and usually come in the Cast Alloy or durable CNC Machined Alloy variety.

To find what you’re looking for, try using our search box. You may also wish to compare your existing hanger with the images on our site and, if you’re still unsure, please get in touch with us using the contact us page.

Absolutely feel free to send a photograph of your frame or hanger as well – that very often helps.

Tip:

Whilst relatively easy to fit, many local bike shops will be happy to fit the new hanger for you, if you are unsure about doing it yourself.

After fitting a new hanger always make sure to reset your gears – this will minimise the risk of breaking the new piece
